How to get it paid for - WIA eligible individuals can qualify for training or courses offered by these pre-approved vendors, and other support service such as:
 
  Child care
  Books
  Transportation
  Work clothes
  Other financial assistance
 
S.T.A.R.S. Program
The third year for the STARS Scholarship program was completed in May 2006. According to Brenda Greene, SETWDB Program Coordinator, 174 graduating, college-bound high school seniors and first year college students throughout Southeast Texas have received approximately $174,000 in scholarships through the program. In addition to scholarship money, laptop computers and printers are given to those students who complete 2 semesters of college courses as a full-time student and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. To date, the program has awarded laptops and printers to 72 college students.
 
Qualifications for the S.T.A.R.S. Scholarship program:
 
  High School Senior, or Freshman or Sophmore College Student with a 2.0 GPA or higher.
  First Generation College Student - Parents may not have more than 30 hours of college credits.
  WIA Eligible
  Major in a Targeted Occupation
 
Additional Services for S.T.A.R.S. students:
 
  Summer Internship Program - Local businesses offer on the job training for students in their degree plan.
  THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment) Camp - Designed to assist first and second semester S.T.A.R.S. students prepare for the required entrance exam.
